Wayne Rooney holds Frank Lampard in high regard, with the duo set to meet on Boxing Day.

The England legends were Three Lions team-mates for more than a decade, as well as regularly facing each other in the Premier League. They are now looking to resurrect their managerial careers in the Championship.

Rooney is in charge at Plymouth Argyle, while Lampard recently became Coventry City boss. The Sky Blues host Rooney's Pilgrims on Boxing Day, with both sides in desperate need of a victory.

While it is unclear if either will become successful as managers, both enjoyed fantastic playing careers. Lampard has been the subject of debate even during his time featuring for England.

Much of England's struggles during his time in team were put down to his failure to gel with fellow midfielders Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes. But Rooney firmly put the debate to bed recently.

"Paul Scholes, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard are all different. As an all-rounder, Stevie is the best; he can defend, pass the ball, run, tackle, score goals, set pieces. As an all-rounder he’s the best from that point of view," he told The Overlap.

"From a goalscoring point of view, Lamps [Frank Lampard] was the best. The goals he scored were incredible from midfield and technically he wasn’t at Stevie or Scholesy’s level but there was no-one better at scoring goals from midfield.

"Scholesy, the way he adapted [made him amazing]. He was a striker when he was younger so to go to a ten, then midfield then a deeper midfielder dictating the game, I don’t think either of the other two [Gerrard or Lampard] could dictate a game the way he could.

"All were world-class players. Stevie could come to Manchester United and be a top player and do what Scholes could do. But I don’t think Scholes could do what Stevie did at Liverpool."

Argyle enter Thursday's game in the midst of a seven-game winless run. Coventry meanwhile were battered 4-1 by Portsmouth on Saturday. Ahead of the clash Lampard made it clear he holds his former team-mate in equally high regard.

"I know Wayne well for many years now. He is working with Plymouth and they’ve had some good performances and they’ll probably feel like they haven’t got what they’ve deserved. Full respect for him and I look forward to seeing him," he said.

"It was an absolute pleasure to play with him for England and to play against him. He was a Premier League and England great, and his numbers and performances should never be understated, because the level of player he was, was in incredible.

"To see the work ethic behind it that he had as a player and see the impact he had on teammates, being at camps with him where you see what the person is as well as the player, he is amazing and I’m sure he is very proud of the career he had because he was one of the all-time ones.”
